Supportive Counseling

Life is difficult.  If we expect it to be otherwise, we will frequently be frustrated, disappointed and confused.  Likewise, counseling may be difficult.  One way to describe good counseling is that it is that process which helps us determine where we want to be and how to get there.  I think we usually know where we want to be, but getting there involves change - and change can be frightening, maybe painful.  So we try and avoid the pain, only to discover that legitimate pain can not be avoided, only delayed.  The supportive counseling I provide acknowledges that while pain is a part of life, and can not be avoided, with support and guidance, the pain can be faced and worked through, allowing us to move closer to where we want to be.

The type of counseling that may be most beneficial often depends on the reason for seeking help.  People often seek counseling when they:
  • Experience a traumatic event
  • Determine that their current situation is no longer acceptable
  • Seek to grow/heal and enrich their lives
Counseling sometimes involves changing our life situation and sometimes it involves accepting those situations we can not change.  The good news is that we can improve our level of happiness, joy and contentment in our life, even if we can’t change our life situation.
