My “Bible of Psychotherapy” is The Road Less Traveled, authored by M. Scott Peck. The first few lines in his book are, "Life is difficult. This is a great truth, one of the greatest truths. It is a great truth because once we truly see this truth, we transcend it. Once we truly know that life is difficult-once we truly understand and accept it-then life is no longer difficult. Because once it is accepted, the fact that life is difficult no longer matters."
Life is difficult. If we expect it to be otherwise/easy, we will frequently be frustrated, disappointed and confused. Likewise, counseling is difficult. One way to describe good counseling is that it is that process which helps us determine where we want to be and how to get there.
